REDMOND, Wa. (CBS Seattle) - Microsoft is likely to name one of its own as its new chief executive officer, reports Bloomberg.

Satya Nadella is the head of the company’s cloud and data group, he’s now the man expected to take the place of Steve Ballmer.

Sources say the 46-year-old Nadella emerged as a front runner in the past few weeks, apparently impressing the team interviewing candidates for the job. The source cautioned that nothing has been finalized.

Michael Cusumano, a professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, tells Bloomberg that naming an insider is a good choice.

“Microsoft is a contentious enough place that you wouldn’t want to bring in someone who lacked credibility with the engineers,” Cusumano said.

Nadella boosted revenues in Microsoft’s server business by nearly $4 billion when he took over in 2011.

The leadership change comes as the tech giant must make some big decisions about the future.

“CBS This Morning” anchor Charlie Rose spoke with Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates.

“Because you’re competing with so many different companies.” Allen said, “you have so many different products.  And so any new CEO coming in has to decide, do they continue to compete in so many areas?  Or do they jettison some of the larger investments that have already been made and focus down on a lesser number of areas?”
