SEATTLE (CBS Seattle) – Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has suggested the unthinkable…the company should get into the Android business.
Not Star Trek’s Data, he means the Android phone, the biggest competitor to the iPhone, Apple’s premiere product.
In an interview with Wired, Wozniak says it would be a logical extension of the Apple brand.
“There’s nothing that would keep Apple out of the Android market as a secondary phone market. We could compete very well.” he said.
Apple-philes might scream heresy, CNet calls the idea “akin to the company buying the Zune brand and resurrecting it.” But Wozniak thinks they would come to appreciate Apple’s trademark styling of an Android phone.
“People like the precious looks of stylings and manufacturing that we do in our product compared to the other Android offerings. We could play in two arenas at the same time.”
It wouldn’t be technically difficult to create an iAndroid, the open-source operating system software can be used by any phone-maker. Though it would necessitate a change in Apple’s business model, which is a closed system very much controlled by the company.
Don’t expect such a thing to happen anytime soon…Wozniak is no-longer part of the day-to-day operations of the company he helped create.
