SEATTLE (CBS Seattle) – Amazon wants to move from the information superhighway to a drone superhighway.

The online retailer has unveiled a plan to set aside airspace exclusively for its delivery drones, reports PC World.

Amazon is asking that airspace between 200 and 400 feet from ground level be reserved for state of the art unmanned aerial vehicles. The company also wants the space from 400 to 500 feet designated a no-fly zone to act as a buffer between its drones and other aircraft.

“The way we guarantee the greatest safety is by requiring that as the level of complexity of the airspace increases, so does the level of sophistication of the vehicle,” said Gur Kimchi, vice president and co-founder of Amazon’s delivery-by-drone project, Prime Air, during a NASA convention in California. “Under our proposal everybody has to be collaborative, vehicles must be able to talk to each other and avoid each other as the airspace gets denser at low altitudes.”

It’s part of Amazon’s plan to deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less.
